Documentation

This series of work centers on Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller’s teacher and the often-overlooked force behind Keller’s story. Each portrait blends expressive texture and a non-traditional palette to showcase Sullivan’s vitality, persistence, and complexity. The gradual dissolution of form across the three panels echoes Sullivan’s own deteriorating eyesight. Across the top margin of each panel, tactile Braille inscriptions reading “ANNE SULLIVAN,” “TEACHER,” and “STRONG” declare her presence, honoring both her visual impairment and the tactile world she opened for Keller. In centering Sullivan rather than Keller, the work asks what it means to remember strength, not only in publicly celebrated figures, but also in the forces that shaped their paths.
